Hey all!
Thank you so much to everyone who attended the town hall on June 2 and to everyone else who has shared thoughts and asked for notes. We’ve been working hard to get this summary out to you and appreciate your patience. We are profoundly grateful for your contribution to this ongoing conversation around our role as nightlife workers in the fight for a free Palestine.
Town Hall Summary
“We do not fear this country and its arrogance. We are the ones who create life. They are the ones who create death.” - Walid Daqqa
Over the last several months, DAA has…
- Accumulated close to 3000 signatures from all over the world
- Met on a weekly basis to plan actions and support each other
- Raised tens of thousands of dollars through fundraiser events, tabling, and merch sales for families evacuating Gaza and rebuilding their lives
- Worked with Ravers For Palestine to organize the boycott of 5 venues, maintain the strike fund (which is currently in need of donations!), and support participating artists
- Started crucial conversations with nightlife institutions/workers privately and through efforts like tabling at Movement Detroit
- Collected, written, and shared educational resources related to cultural resistance
Calls to action:
- PACBI - axmed from PACBI (Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel) shared about efforts to combat the cultural normalization of Israel. Recently, Papi Juice and Dweller endorsed PACBI, and other cultural institutions can initiate this process by reaching out here: [email protected].
- 5% donation - We put forth the call for artists who’ve signed the statement to donate 5% of their fees to a fundraiser of their choice.
- Based on your feedback, we heard concerns about individual capacity and agree this is just one suggestion to harness our collective power and meet the most urgent needs of the moment. We agree that we should pressure venues, promoters, and institutions who are well positioned to contribute financially as well.
- Tag us on socials if you’re donating and we’ll promote your event!
- If there are particular efforts you would like to highlight for this initiative, please reach out.
- Local organizing - We want to encourage you all to connect with each other both in and outside of nightlife, plug into existing local organizing groups, and continue building our political education/power.
- To that end, we’ve launched a Discord, which you can join here! https://discord.gg/p4jnmPTp
Discussion:
In both our breakout groups and open discussion, we heard a lot of beautiful ideas about what DAA means to us and what concrete actions we can undertake as nightlife workers. Here are a few highlights that came out of our discussion:
Committing to DAA means a commitment to…
- Building solidarity and a community that keeps people optimistic, inspired, and galvanized to action
